Rep. Scott Calls on DOD to Reclassify Ft. Hood Attack as Terrorism
Rep. Tim Scott (SC-01)
Washington,
Oct 24, 2012 -
Rep. Tim Scott called on the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) to reclassify the 2009 shooting at Fort Hood, TX as an act of terrorism.
Rep. Scott issued the following statement:
"With all due respect to those at DOD, it is clear that the attack on Fort Hood was a terrorist attack. To classify this terrible tragedy as ‘workplace violence’ is not only counterintuitive to the details we know regarding this case, but is a slap in the face to the victims. It is important, for a multitude of reasons, to both the victims of the attacks and their families that the attack be described as terrorism. Our military justice system works so that those charged with a crime are presumed innocent, and I have full confidence that Major Hasan will receive the same treatment in court regardless of how the event is characterized by DOD. Therefore, I ask that DOD reverse course on this matter and call this tragedy what it truly was – an act of terrorism."
